In the classic design, a spiral helical blade is wound on the lower end of the shaft. The lower edge of the blade is shaped and scraped off the wood; the rest of the blade lifts the chips.
Its two hands are driven by a T-shaped handle located on the top of the shaft. More modern versions have carefully crafted spiral drills with multiple blades in multiple locations.
Modern versions also have different methods of driving the shaft, resulting in various tools such as supports, wheel drills and electric drills.
